Welcome from Annabel Knowles
As a mother of three children, with a wealth of primary teaching experience and a passion for Early Years Education, I am very excited to be heading up Churcher’s College Nursery and would love to welcome your son or daughter into the our caring Churcher’s family. I have relished the opportunity to set up the sort of nursery I would have wanted my own children to attend.
My training at The Froebel Institute of Education in London instilled in me a love of working with very young children whose capacity for learning, love of life and new experiences provides the cornerstone of their future education.
We believe in a holistic approach, getting the children’s attitude to learning right at this age means that they are set up for the school journey ahead. We believe a relaxed, happy child, who is able to laugh, will learn best.
Like Froebel, we believe that a child’s natural love of play and exploration, together withgiving young children a rich and varied environment, is the primary mode for learning, enabling them to blossom and grow into creative, free-thinking individuals.
At Churcher’s College Nursery we aim to give the children not only a caring and nurturing space in which to ‘be’, but also an exciting and creative learning environment both indoors and outside to ‘become’.
We all really look forward to meeting you and your little ones.
Annabel Knowles, Head of Nursery
The first steps, though seemingly small, are often the biggest, as these most inquisitive of minds embark on their educational journey.
Nestled in the grounds of our Junior School, Churcher’s College Nursery is a warm and creative environment where children are encouraged to explore, question and discover.
Every child is unique and we want to give each boy and girl every opportunity to grow and flourish in a safe and nurturing environment so that they become happy, self-confident and thoughtful children who respect each other and the wonderful natural spacethey are sharing. All our Churcher’s College Nursery children are guaranteed a place in Churcher’s College Junior School Reception class.
The Owl and the Pussycat Theme
The Nursery is themed around the nursery rhyme "The Owl and The Pussycat" who went to sea in a pea green boat - connecting nicely with Churcher's College's nautical history. The older children are the Owls and our very youngest are the Pussycats.
Inside the classroom
Our bright and airy building has been newly-designed and purpose-built to offer a wide range of exciting and stimulating learning areas; this includes a bespoke kitchen with a low bench for children’s cooking, a dedicated story and role-play corner, literacy and numeracy zones, areas for investigative and imaginative challenges, beautiful outdoor spaces and access to the Junior School facilities including the halls, library and ICT suite. Home cooked food and healthy snacks are served daily to the children.
The Nursery is open during term time from 8.00am to 4.30pm (4pm on Friday), welcoming children from the age of two years nine months (during the term in which they turn three). We have two classes: the older children are the Owls and our very youngest are the Pussycats.
Focusing on learning through play, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum to ensure that activities engage and challenge youngsters in a setting where children feel safe, happy, secure and confident.
Outside the classroom
Children love exploring the school grounds and a great emphasis is placed on the ‘outdoor classroom’. The sandpit, garden, mud kitchen, playhouse and water and role-play areas provide an invigorating environment in which to learn. There is also a hard surface for riding bikes and covered space to play, whatever the weather.
Our Commitment to Your Child
The Early Years Foundation Stage encompasses seven areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
We work very closely with parents to ensure that you are kept up to date with your child’s progress in all areas, so that their individual needs and talents are being recognised and nurtured at all stages of their school life. We pride ourselves on our excellent relationships with parents and the children are at the heart of all that we do.
From their physical well-being, coordination and movement to building self-esteem , forging friendships, and fostering a love of language and reading, the breadth and depth of their Early Years education will help your child to challenge their understanding of the world around them.
