Junior School Extra Curriculum
Children are encouraged to become involved in a wide range of activities offere

The aim of offering extra-curricular activities at Churcher’s College Junior School is to create challenge and to allow children to experience a variety of new and exciting activities. Outdoor Education
Children in Year 3 take part in a fun, challenging and exciting ‘Team building’ day. Based at school the aim of the day is to build on the skills of teamwork, friendship and co-operation. Tasks such as Orienteering, Assault course team challenge and small ‘trust’ games are used to give the pupils a great platform to get know each other and forge new and strong working relationships. The end of the day sees a parent v pupils rounders match and much needed BBQ run by the Parents Association. All in all a very busy, but worthwhile day of activities.
Children in Year 4 are bound for The Three Peaks Outdoor Pursuits Centre in Farnham. There they get the chance to try 5 activities including quad biking, archery, rope courses and team building. This a new venue for the Year 4 groups and will provide a good stepping stone of experience before they go onto try a whole weekend of activities in Yr 5 and 6.

Pupils in Year 5 to 6 take part in Adventure Weekends twice a year.
Weekend Adventure Camps provide the opportunity to perform outdoor and adventurous activities in different environments and the children can engage in challenges of a physical and problem-solving nature. Children have the chance to do a multitude of activities including abseiling , orienteering, to trekking along coast paths to flying down a zip wire! All these experiences are managed within a controlled, and safe environment at approved County Council assessed
centers. As with all education, we seek to prepare children both to cope with the
unexpected and to take on, and indeed seek, challenges in later life and these
weekends really do bring out the best in the individual. Children are
accommodated in either Youth Hostels or learn how to erect their own tent and
camp under the stars!

Trips and Visits
Ski Trip
Pupils in Yr 5 and 6 are offered the chance to take to their skis in an annual ski trip.
Previous trips have included visits to Courmayeur, Pila and La Thuile in the Aosta Valley in Italy. Each day consists of 4 hours tuition and then this is followed by a fun packed
apres ski programme in the evening. The children soon pick up the techniques and are
whizzing down the slopes.
French Trip
Every Spring Term Yr 6 pupils are immersed in French Culture when they visit Northern France for a 3 day visit. Sand sailing, working in a French school, meeting their pen pals to whom they have been corresponding with for months and improving conversational French in the local market are just some of the fun and stimulating activities that take place.
Extra Curricular Music Activities
Music clubs for the Infants include a Choir, which regularly visits a residential home in the area to entertain the residents and a whole class recorder group (from summer year 1). Where appropriate, able instrumentalists are invited to join junior ensembles. From time to time we run the ever-popular and aptly named ‘Scrape, Bang and Blow Club’!
There are numerous extra-curricular music activities for pupils in years 3 – 6. The Boys’, Girls’ and Chamber Choirs perform in the local community, give concerts, carol services, festivals, and on occasions, local radio (as part of the nationwide Sing Up campaign).
At present the instrumental ensembles include an orchestra, wind band, recorder, brass and string ensembles. Pupils perform music relevant to their individual standards and occasional sessions encourage improvisation and composing.
The emphasis is very much on enjoyment and confidence building, along with fostering a sense of team spirit and co-operation.
With our fantastic new Studio we are able to host occasional events, such as our “Strings on Saturday”, a charity event, raising funds for music projects to reach some of the poorest children in the developing world. Seven local schools participated in this fun and worthwhile day.
We have wonderful music technology facilities and our Composing Club attracts the very best of our talented composers.
