First Challenge Expedition to Romania gathers pace

Seventy 14 year old pupils are taking nothing for granted, in the knowledge that the 12 day adventure in Romania this summer will be tough and challenging.

Being away from home and taking responsibility for all their food preparation, cooking, budgeting, shopping, and packing can be a daunting experience for youngsters.  The adventure will involve trekking and wild camping for 5 days, white water rafting, travelling overnight by train, and then working on a playground in a kindergarten school and contributing to a community project in Zarnesti, to which Churcher’s will donate funds.

In preparation for the adventure, the enthusiastic pupils went on a training and problem solving weekend in Swanage, learning how to work as a team under arduous conditions.

As dawn broke across the Purbeck Hills there was a gentle murmur of cooking trangias clanging and zips opening on the tents, as girls and boys awoke and realized there would be no parent waking them up, so it was up to them to organize and cook their own breakfast, and indeed get lunch ready, having already cooked and washed up their meal from last night.  10 teachers accompanied the pupils and assisted in teaching life-saving skills for emergencies, such as drills to make and carry a stretcher to evacuate an injured person, “lost” procedure, and how to deal with minor incidents.
