Bringing learning to life

If, as W. B. Yeats suggests, education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire, then interest needs to be piqued, passion inspired, and love of subjects generated to encourage study well beyond the rubric of an exam syllabus.

Sometimes referred to as co-curricular, our supra-curricular provision aims to support students in their studies, taking learning further, through real-world experience, adding context and new dimensions to it.

Academic Lecture Series

Churcher’s College Academic Lecture Series talks, given by visiting speakers, aim to inspire and challenge our young people to think about the world around them, broadening their horizons and giving them insights into new topics or deepening their understanding of subjects of interest.

The Grill Lecture is the highlight of the CCALS year. Named after Judy Grill, a former Head of Humanities, and teacher of Religion & Philosophy at Churcher’s, the Grill Lecture is given by well-known and high profile academics, politicians and public figures.

Previous speakers have included Lord Robert Winston, John McCarthy, Monty Halls, Paddy Ashdown, Chris Packham and Simon Weston.

STEAM

STEAM uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as a way to enrich student’s learning into how all things relate to each other, in school and in life - it encourages curiosity and a sense of discovery.

STEAM activities are popular because they are fun and practical, involving the investigation into topics which interest and engage them. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century.

Academic Olympiads

Academic Olympiads are challenging competitions which give students a chance to show their academic strength in applying subject knowledge to new situations.

Students take part in Olympiads in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computing and Maths

Olympiad benefits:

Promotes intellectual curiosity
Helps to breed resilience
The questions are quirky and demanding. For the most able students it is an important lesson to realise what they are up against for the most sought after university places in the future.

Trips & Visits

We regularly arrange trips and visits, both domestically and abroad, which help pupils gain real-world experience that cannot be taught in a classroom, opening their minds to different cultures and strengthening their knowledge of the world around them. Subject-related trips range from a local visit to Petersfield Museum or Durdle Door in Dorset, to international sports tours to South Africa or music tours to Lake Garda, Italy.
