A Churcher’s team has brought the David Cave Trophy home by winning the latest round of the English Speaking Union, Public Speaking Competition.

Dr Cave, former Head of English at the school, helped to coach the ESU students at Churcher’s until his retirement in 2021. He very sadly passed away shortly afterwards.

Two teams of our students competed in the West Sussex and Hampshire Branch Final, presenting speeches on the topics: ‘There is no such thing as free choice’ and ‘Hypocrisy is not the worst thing on Earth.’

The judges commented on what a close final this was, with Ditcham Park and Seaford College also competing.

There were individual nods to Zhara as ‘Best Chair’ and Ruby as ‘Best Questioner’.

For Churcher’s Team A, Freya was extremely confident and well-received in her role as Speaker, and Will made everyone feel at home with his comedic turn as Chairperson.

In the end it was Churcher’s Team B, comprising of Zhara (Chair), Jessie (Speaker) and Thomas (Questioner) who made it through to the regional finals that will be staged in March.
