Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race 2026

Students have delivered an exceptional performance in this year’s endurance kayaking challenge, demonstrating remarkable resilience, teamwork and determination. After months of training in challenging conditions, ice, wind and rain, all their hard work culminated in an impressive set of achievements.
The event began on Good Friday in Devizes, where the team set off on a demanding 34-mile paddle to Newbury. After completing the first leg, they camped overnight and prepared for the next stage. On Saturday, the journey continued from Newbury to Marlow, covering a further 36 miles and taking the teams deeper into the Thames section of the route. Sunday proved to be the toughest day, with a 38-mile stretch from Marlow to Teddington, the longest leg of the challenge. With the finish line in sight, spirits remained high despite the physical demands. After another night camping, participants rose before 4am on Monday to prepare for the final stage, timing their start with the high tide. Two teams earned places in the prestigious mass start, reserved for the top boats, adding excitement to the final push. All teams successfully completed the race at Barn Elms, finishing in strong spirits and with a great sense of accomplishment.
Collectively, the DW team achieved an outstanding second place among all junior teams, with a combined time of 61 hours, 31 minutes and 28 seconds. Individual performances were equally impressive. One crew secured first place in the junior ladies category, while another achieved third place in the junior men’s category. A further team finished eighth overall, and another placed sixth in a highly competitive field, demonstrating the depth of talent across the group.
Beyond their sporting success, the team also made a meaningful contribution to an important cause, raising £1,560 for Surfers Against Sewage. This charity campaigns for cleaner water and holds companies accountable for pollution, an issue particularly close to their hearts.
