A team of Churcher’s students ventured into London over the weekend of Saturday 2 March to take part in the National Finals of the UK Space Design Competition at Imperial College, London.

Back in October, at the qualifying heat, the team came away with the winning bid, having developed and presented their plans for a moon mining base, considering the materials, temperatures, hostile environment, logistics and economic factors involved. This secured their place for the finals along with 24 other schools.

This time, their attentions turned to designing a space elevator, along with a 40-page document entitled ‘Between the Earth and the Moon’, for which they spent 22 hours planning.

Under the leadership of Sixth Form student Caitlin, the team presented their ideas to a panel of judges and secured the runners-up position, narrowly missing the top spot. Special mention goes to Olly who was awarded a special prize for his contributions as a "Silent Leader" - making significant contributions in the background towards their success.

There is potential for one team member to represent the UK at the International Finals in Florida this summer, with a decision expected soon – we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Finally, despite not being present at the event due to prior commitments, a big well done goes to Sixth Form student Joel, who also contributed significantly to the team.
