Churcher’s College is celebrating a remarkable achievement as Penny Daniel, Senior School English teacher, has been named as one of the final eight Silver Winners in the Pearson National Teaching Awards for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School.

Penny has earned recognition for her boundless energy, creativity, and compassion. Formerly the school librarian, she now inspires students with her English teaching, fostering a love of reading and writing in every pupil. She is also a published author, with her Lollypop series shortlisted for The Sunday Times Book of the Week, bringing storytelling vividly to life.

Beyond the classroom, Penny co-leads Churcher’s College’s World Challenge expeditions, which see pupils and staff volunteering in countries including Zambia, Poland, Mozambique, and Bolivia, such as in respite centres for children with severe disabilities. She organises memorable charity events and the school’s public speaking team, which recently became national finalists. Penny also chairs the Book Club and curates the annual Grill Lecture - a community lecture series - enriching both students and the wider community.

Reflecting on her achievement, Penny said:
"It was an incredible honour to be shortlisted. I felt so proud to represent all of us who put our heart and soul into supporting the children at Churcher’s. It was humbling to be in the company of so many inspirational teachers from across the length and breadth of the UK."

Penny’s dedication to literature, education, and charity has left an indelible mark on Churcher’s College. Her tireless commitment and infectious enthusiasm continue to shape the lives of students, colleagues, and the wider community — a truly deserving recognition at the national level.
