Thatcher and Europe Lecture

All our Upper and Lower Sixth historians enjoyed a lecture given by Dr Alwyn Turner on Thatcher, Major and the EU.

He used primary sources such as cartoons, newspapers and radio broadcasts to bring this schismatic topic life. He looked at the long-term origins of Eurosceptics and the legacy left in the Tory party. He drew a line from Thatcher’s 1988 Bruges speech to the Brexit referendum of 2016, and looked at how Thatcher’s vision had won in the current Conservative party.
