Lower School Production: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Churcher’s Pupils Grow the Roses of Success!
Our 1st–3rd Year pupils got hands clapping and feet tapping as they kicked off the first night of their dazzling Lower School production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Monday 9 February 2026.
The story closely follows the much-loved 1968 film. Caractacus Potts is an eccentric inventor and devoted father who rescues a battered old car and restores it into a beautiful vehicle with a mind of its own - one that can float and fly - which his children name Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. When Grandpa Potts is kidnapped by the absurdly villainous Baron and Baroness Bomburst of Vulgaria, and their sinister Child Catcher captures the Potts children, Caractacus must outwit them all, free his family, and restore joy and imagination to the land.

The production boasts an impressive cast of around 70 pupils, featuring sparky and hilarious lead performances supported by a dedicated and energetic ensemble. At the heart of the show is, of course, its centrepiece: a striking replica of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car itself, complete with classic details and spectacular wings.
The music and choreography are a delight throughout. In addition to the film’s most recognisable numbers, the stage production includes additional songs performed with real gusto, accompanied by sophisticated choreography that blends tap, ballet, and ensemble movement to great effect.

The visual spectacle doesn’t stop there. From the beautiful costumes to the inventive set design - complete with clever pyrotechnics and imaginative audio-visual effects - the production consistently surprises. A particular highlight is the moment when poor Grandpa Potts is whisked away by his kidnappers, soaring skywards in his potting shed, prompting uproarious laughter and delighted gasps from the audience.

No review of a Churcher’s musical would be complete without acknowledging the dedication of the backstage and technical crews, as well as the orchestra, all of whom work tirelessly to make a production of this scale such a success. All these teams include a large number of Churcher's pupils, for whom taking part involves stepping into big roles of responsibility.
This is a show filled with nostalgia, fun, and creativity, capturing the true spirit of a much-loved classic. A huge well done to everyone involved.
