For Speech Day 2021, Churcher’s College was delighted to welcome as Guest of Honour Sophie Kinsella, the best-selling author whose books have sold 45 million copies in over 60 countries and have been translated into more than 40 languages.

A charismatic speaker, Sophie entertained the audience with advice for the students based on her hugely successful career. A master of satire, her speech was funny and insightful offering worldly-wise pearls of wisdom, delivered with warmth and humour and very well received by all.

After studying at New College, Oxford University, Sophie worked as a financial journalist before turning to fiction. She published her first novel at the age of 24 which was immediately hailed as a success and became a top ten best-seller.  Sophie is best known for writing the ‘Shopaholic’ series of seven novels, two of which have been made into Hollywood films. She has also written ten standalone novels, all bestsellers in the UK, USA and other countries around the world as well as publishing a Young Adult novel and a young readers’ series including an illustrated book.

Speech Day at Churcher’s College is the annual Upper School prize giving event, which was extra special this year after the trials and tribulations of the last eighteen months, an opportunity to welcome parents and friends back to school to recognise the extraordinary achievements of the pupils. It is an opportunity to see and hear about the pupils’ adventures, enterprise, endeavours and accomplishments.

Other speakers included the Chairman of Governors, the Captains of College and Headmaster, Simon Williams, who shared another reason why this academic year is so special:

“There is much to celebrate this year, not least because it is our 300th Birthday year.   I am sure Richard Churcher would be proud of what has been accomplished since he created Churcher’s College in 1722 but he would be especially impressed by the Churcherians of today.”

Congratulations to all the students who won a prize this year!
