Building an Ecobrick Planter

Well done to Fourth Year pupils Laurie, Austin, Noah, Caspar, Tahlia, Isabelle, Benji and Will who recently finished our 'ecobrick' garden planting area.

An ecobrick is a plastic bottle densely packed with soft plastics which would otherwise go to landfill, to create a reusable building block that can be used to produce various items, including furniture, garden walls and other structures. The plastic in an ecobrick is very durable and will never break down, making it an ideal building material.

The ecobrick planter project was started towards the end of the summer term this year and carried on into the autumn term. It has involved setting the bricks in a circular shape and setting them in place by mixing and applying cement. The pupils had a great time getting involved with these materials and landscaping skills in a way that, very likely, they had not experienced before. It was certainly a morning of a different kind of education and they impressed us all with their hard work and enthusiasm.

The next part of the project will be to fill the planter with soil and decide on the best plants to go in it. Super eco efforts, everyone. Thank you to our Grounds/Maintenance staff who have been so helpful on this project, too.
