The 80th anniversary of the D-Day operation was commemorated with a moving Act of Remembrance on Thursday, June 6th. The event, organised by the Petersfield Town Council, saw the community gather to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who participated in the historic military operation.

The service was graced by several dignitaries, including the Mayor of Petersfield Town Council, members of the Royal British Legion, The Petersfield Mayor’s Cadet, and Councillors from the East Hampshire District Council’s Petersfield Ward.

Cadets from Churcher’s College Combined Cadet Force (CCF), representing the Army, RAF, and Royal Navy, attended the event, forming up in Petersfield Square and marching down the High Street to the War Memorial. Wreaths were laid in honor of those who fought and fell on D-Day, serving as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by the fallen.

The D-Day operation, which marked a pivotal turning point during World War II, was executed on June 6, 1944, and remains the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Codenamed Operation OVERLORD, it involved the coordination of land, air, and sea forces of the Allied armies. Five naval assault divisions were delivered to the beaches of Normandy, France, in a bid to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation.
