We were immensely privileged to welcome Francis Chamberlain, grandson of Neville Chamberlain, who gave a fascinating talk to our 64 A Level historians. His many personal recollections added colour and depth to our understanding of the remarkable man his Grandfather was.
Francis focused on the years leading up to the Second World War, outlining the mood of a country desperate to avoid conflict against the backdrop of an increasingly aggressive Nazi regime. He presented evidence that Chamberlain had actively sought to rearm Britain from 1936 and was fully aware of Hitler’s ambitions. Francis also reflected on the benefit of hindsight that historians enjoy today - something unavailable to Chamberlain at the time.
He concluded with a powerful quote: “He did not know how things would turn out. But he gave his all to avert a devastating war and, once it came, he did everything he could to ensure that Britain would win it.”
